War of Words Season 6 (WOW6) -Nigeria’s premiere Spoken Word competition which concluded last week Sunday was an afternoon of tongue twisting thrills. With a competitiveness that launched the affair into the realm of Sports, the event culminated in a deadlock between Wayne Samuel and Charly. By means of a poem that has since received critical acclaim, Wayne Samuel emerged the winner, earning himself The moniker ‘The Godfather‘. Now Wayne Samuel in celebration of his victory releases ‘Ready Set, No’ , the debut single from his forthcoming Spoken Word mixtape titled ‘Sunday Service At The Club’.
The track set delightfully to The Weeknds ‘Wicked Games’ instrumental begins with the pensive poet chronicling a life in search of the limelight, trying to stay ahead in an imagined race that is really against one’s own fears, anxieties and ambitions. Like trying to outrun one’s shadow, the poet reveals that this is ultimately as fruitless as same sex marriages. The unorthodox beat for a spoken word poem, and a delivery consisting of an almost Hip Hopesque meter, afford Wayne Samuel an avenue to advice and entertain.
‘Sunday Service At The Club’ which is scheduled for a late January release is a dynamic offering running the gamut from faith to weakness. ‘It is about trying to make the impossible happen in the realm of possibilities, birds trying to thrive in rivers, trees seeking root in concrete, trying to hold a Sunday service at the club, light shining in darkness.’ The artiste has teased that a second single featuring Benin based crooner Osan and produced by Wonder Sounds entitled ‘Shape Of You’ (inspired by Ed Sheeran’s smash hit of the same name, and delivered on an acoustic version of the song) will be released in time for Valentine’s Day next year. But till then, let ‘Ready Set No’ sate your ear buds.
